3 Other suggestions, purdy please?
Label the era TOO (like early w/cryptical, post-cryptical pre-'retirement' or ~'86 no rumbling intro, or short '80s, or long '80s, you know)

4/2/82 Duke -sbd on IA has the BIG rumble intro compressed seems to me @ 1 min +
RUMBLIN' 80 Other 1

6/24/85 w/Comes a Time sandwich all around a Cryptical
magical, anticipatory

6/30/85 I was front row (& a cryptical &..., well, you know the Shakedown
Magical Summer '85

Help me get out of this mid-80's Other 1 rut (well, I can think of worse places to be stuck)

3/1/69 - you can't hear it on lma but I think it goes w/o saying that theTOO portion of this version is possibly the most bombastic and ballsy thing I've ever heard the band do

4/15/70 -this contains an upbeat Santana-esque jam BEFORE the other one that I've never heard anywhere else

6/18/74- a well known and extremely unique version, this one starts out with some intense group playing, quickly goes melt-your-noodle space, and ends in an awesome funky jam

10-22-67 one of the first (?) ever performances... very interesting for a reference point
2-15-69 sets my soul on fire

Good call, Strato:

Uni-dome 1978-02-05 (Third disc of DP 18)
This TOO is one of the most powerful TOO's out there. When they come out of the trillin' solo, they sound like a charging pack of pachyderms trampling everything in their path. I love this sound and wish the Dead had pursued it further. Can't get enough.
Here is a link to an aud: http://www.archive.org/details/gd78-02-05.aud.set2.warner.19466.sbeok.shnf

I haven't listened to this source but clementinescaboose says the DP is a big upgrade. Anyway, take a taste here first.

As much as I love many of the nascent versions of the late 60's - here are three of my most frequented 'go to' versions - each with their own distinctive flavor or character . . .

7-2-71 - the closing of the Fillmore West, SF and 'deadicated to owsley' ... kinda says it all. a cryptical journey with a triumphant and stately end befitting the occasion.

5-3-72 - the Olympia, Paris - at over 40 minutes, the wonderful journey with it's broad, impressionistic palette, this 'one' goes off to so many places ... snaking through the fog, ambling along the riverside and down so many dark alleys - twisting and teasing - with such subtlety and purpose . . . for my franc (or euro now), the mother of them all. Messiaen, Varese and Milhaud - they're all there in this rich performance.

2-5-78 - the Uni Dome, Cedar Falls, Iowa (DP-18) - the one I grab for when I see a wall cloud approaching - an intense, compact short story with great dynamics that build to a screaming Jerry led crescendo that explodes with all the energy of nature's fury . . . leaving the listener shaken yet smiling and wondering what just hit them.

4/28/71, Fillmore East - This is the Skull and Roses version, but you can listen to the entire thing at LMA. Sharp, brilliant and to the point. Perfect recording. Top five for me.

10/27/72, Columbus - A powerful performance but a lousy recording. Still well worth it. Only Other One> Half Step.

Here are three more that are definitely outside the 80s ... My descriptions aren't very musically savvy, I'm sure, but here goes:

9/28/72

Phil is very “on” – really in the driver’s seat – and the whole thing is intense, with a lot of interplay and tension between raw energy and quiet expectant jazzy sections.

8/6/71

Very hard-driving, with bluesy, mind-melting jamming

3/30/68, CE>TOO>CE>Dark Star (can it get any better?!?)

Amazing primal Dead, full of on-the-edge vitality.

I hope you get a lot of other answers ... for one thing, I'd like to find examples of Spanish Jam>TOO; I know I've heard some great ones, but can't for the life of me remember the shows!

How about a post-cryptical pre-'retirement' rumbling intro that no one EVER mentions?

It may not be an epic performance of the song, but the intro on the Radio Luxembourg Other One is simply gorgeous. This one winds up like a swiss watch. It's pure perfection and one of the all-time greatest intros to the song. There is also a mini-Spanish Jam hidden in there...

cliff, this one is an all-time favorite of mine, but you're right, it rarely gets mentioned. this show is my favorite from europe 72; well, i listen to it the most, anyway. this and the 4/8/72 dark star. the other one is incredibly tight, and the sound quality is better than any europe 72 show i've heard.

Spanish Jam>TOO...let's see...
3/31/73 has an Other One that flirts with the Spanish jam - 6/26/74 and 7/29/74 both have a Truckin>Other One>Spanish jam>Wharf Rat - 8/6/74 has a Truckin>Spanish jam>Other One - and 10/17/74 has a big Other One/Spanish jam/Mind Left Body jam stew...
Skipping to the '80s, 10/19/81, 9/17/82, 10/14/83, 10/20/83, 3/29/84, and 4/7/84 all have a Spanish jam>Other One...

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: AnOther One.- If it ain't from *this* world then it must be from The Other One!

Ahhh, the joy!
Just think of the collective aural scholarship, opinion, &, imVHo--, plain ole revelation from the grateful dead concerning the Grateful Dead that went into this one. I could easily be wrong, I think that there's a connection between the grateful dead & the Grateful Dead; via the Tests, perhaps. If it ain't from *this* world then it must be from The Other One!

I hope everyone agrees that LIA deserves special recognition for two separate responses! I'm thinking a Grey-folded-esque chronological playlist just might be in order at my house, time-permitting.
Love ya' all, my sisters & brothers!
